The ghost of Xena's beloved Marcus appears one night to tell her that the Underworld is in chaos. The dead madman Atyminius has usurped Hades' power by stealing the Helmet of Invisibility and the shades of the wicked roam freely while the innocent dead suffer. Xena promises to set things right, but it's difficult to fight what she cannot see. She travels to the Underworld where she and Marcus learn that they can kill Atyminius because he will become mortal when he returns to the land of the living. Reluctantly, Hades grants Marcus 48 hours of mortality from Tartarus to help capture Atyminius, which also gives him a chance to share his true feelings with Xena. Gabrielle, Xena and Marcus manage to defeat the wily madman, and although Xena must once again depart from Marcus, she convinces a grateful Hades to allow him to enter the Elysian Fields.
